The 2009 CNN Hero of the Year is a Filipino. Efren Peñaflorida topped the online voting spearheaded by CNN. Peñaflorida is known for "Kariton Project", whereby he started a pushcart classroom to bring education to poor children in the Philippines.

Conquering Mathematics

About 75% of Filipino students would say that their least favorite subject would be no other than Mathematics.




I am one of the 75%.

Oh, I really don't know why, but adding to that fact that the subject really sucks, I could not explain why more often than not, the most dreaded subject (which is, of course, Math), is usually handled by the most dreaded Professors at school. Agree? ( I see about 15 people raising their hands simultaneously in agreement!)

It's a good thing that during my high school days, I got math help from my brother who is a Civil Engineer and loves mathematics. He gave me tips of solving the Xs and the Ys, and of finding the As and the Bs, with the occassional pricking of my ears when I really could not catch up with the lessons.

During college, in order to increase my knowledge on mathematics (which is a requirement on my course), I resorted to joining the Math Society- members of which are offering Free Math Help methods to their co-members. Halos naman siguro ng kabataan noong panahon ko ay nakisabay sa awitin ng Eraserheads. Sino nga ba sa mga kasabayan namin ang hindi makakakilala sa kanilang apat? Nang sumikat sila, naglabasan na ring parang mga kabute ang iba't ibang grupo ng bandang tumutugtog at nag-define sa bagong henerasyon.

Nawala sa uso ang mga solo artists. Napuno ng tugtugang banda ang lahat ng radio stations. Eraserheads, Alamid, Yano, The Youth, After Image, True Faith, Introvoys, The Dawn, Rivermaya, Put3ska, Tropical Depression. Unahan sa pangongolekta ng mga tapes (hindi pa kasi uso ang cd). Unahan sa scoop sa kung sinong banda at anong kanta ang nag number 1 sa Top 20 at 12 ni Triggerman sa LS. Aaaah, dekada nubenta.

Sumikat ang Long Hair. Sumikat ang mga itim na t-shirts na may mga imprenta ng mga mukha ng foreign at local bands. Halos lahat ng makita mong grupo nang mga kabataan ay may mga hawak na gitara. Buhay na naman ang rakenrol!

Muling binisita at nagbigay pugay ang mga bagong banda sa mga old rakistas na katulad nila Heber, Pepe Smith, Juan Dela Cruz at Mike Hanopol.

Kung ilalarawan mo ang 90s, pwede mo siyang ilahad sa ilang mga kataga: "Panahon ng Banda".

Taong 1995 nang kumalat ang balita sa unibersidad namin: MAGCO-CONCERT DAW ANG EHEADS!!!!!!

Posible ba? Alanganin kami.

Nakapag concert na ang Alamid at Yano sa Auditorium. Bumisita na rin ang Introvoys at tumili ang mga kolehiyala kay Paco Arespacochaga. Pero darating ang Eheads? Malabo ata yan.

Makalipas ang ilang linggo, nakumpirma ang balita sa pamamagitan ng mga posters na ipinaskil sa mga puno, sa mga pader, sa mga tricycle- Confirmed na! May Concert ang Eheads sa Auditorium. May mga kasama daw na ibang banda-mga front- pero hindi na namin inintindi.

Ang tanging inintindi lang naming barkada ay kailangang makabili kami ng ticket na kulay green na ibinebenta ng isang fraternity/organization na sponsor ng concert. At dahil kasama ko sa bahay ang isa sa mga organizers, madali kaming nakabili ng ticket.

Concert Day- preparado na kami. Hindi pa uso ang cellphone kaya bago maghiwalay sa eskwelahan ay nag-usap usap na kami kung anong oras at saan kami magkikita-kitang magkakabarkada. Napagkasunduan na rin kung saan kami tutuloy pagkatapos ng concert. Kasado na ang lahat.

Nakapila na kami sa harap ng Auditorium nang may narinig kaming ingay. Bumigay ang Front Glass Window at Door ng Audi dahil sa sobrang dami ng taong nagsisiksikan sa harapan. Mabuti at walang stampede. Kung nagkataon pala, kami ang orig, at mas sikat kami sa Ultra Stampede ni Willie Revillame.

Sa una pa lang ay malinaw na ang usapan. Hindi kami uupo sa gawing harapan (alam kasi naming dadagsa ang tao doon). Sa itaas kami tatakbo at magse-save ng upuan para sa mga kasamahan namin. Pagkapasok na pagkapasok namin sa auditorium ay para kaming mga langgam na nakawala at kani-kanyang nagtakbuhan paakyat sa 2nd level ng auditorium.

Nag-uumpisa na ang concert, tumutugtog na ang bandang ewan. Pero hindi sila pinapansin dahil ang hinihintay ng tao ay ang pagpasok ng Eheads.

Hanggang sa natapos na ang mga Front Act. Nag-alisan na ang mga tao sa stage. Lahat sa audience ay tutok ang mga mata sa stage. Isinarado ang telon. Tahimik ang buong paligid.

Pagbukas ng telon, naroon na ang apat, nakahawak sa kani-kanyang instrumento. Tandang tanda ko pa ang suot ni Ely-T shirt na pula na may tatak na Adidas.

Rakrakan Na!

Mabilis ang oras. Tumatakbo ng hindi napapansin. Sunud-sunod, walang pahingang tinutugtog ang mga kanta habang sumasabay ang audience. Hindi mo na halos marinig ang boses ni Ely dahil mas malakas pa ang boses ng katabi mong lumilitaw ang litid sa leeg habang kumakanta.

Hanggang sa narinig ang intro ng Huling El Bimbo. Pawisan ang mga tao sa init sa loob ng auditorium pero tuloy sa pagsabay sa pagkanta ng banda. At bago pa matapos ang kanta, nagulantang ang lahat sa pag-akyat sa stage ng isang pamilyar na mukha- nagpa epal pala ang isa naming kaklase. Umakyat sa stage ang bruho/bruha para mapahiran ng panyo at mahalikan ang nagpapawis na mukha ni Ely.

At natapos ang konsiyerto.

Lumipas ang maraming taon......

Di na tayo nagkita.................

Balita ko'y naghiwa-hiwalay na kayo.....

At may kanya-kanya nang banda..........

Hindi ko na nabalitaan ang naging puno't dulo ng hiwalayan ng Eheads. Pero aaminin kong isa ako sa nalungkot sa paghihiwalay nila. Anu't anuman, nais kong pasalamatan ang bandang nag- define sa aming henerasyon.

Science High

Nilalakad lang namin ang science high mula sa main gate. Lugi kasi kapag nag-tricycle ka pa. At isa pa, marami ka namang nakakasabay na estudyante, kaya hindi ka maiinip.

Sa apat na taong ipinamalagi ko sa institusyong iyon, sadyang kayrami kong naging kakilala. Kayrami kong naging kasama. Kayrami kong naging kaibigan..... Ang ilan sa kanila, mga naging guro ko......

Kabo- teacher namin si Kabo. Sabi ni Kabo sa mga lalaking estudyante, "Kayo! Wag ninyong inaaraw-araw. Hindi ninyo ba alam na nauubos din yan? Baka pag me mga asawa na kayo eh wala na kayong mailabas diyan".

Toma- Tom A. kasi talaga. Tom ang palayaw, A ang initial ng Apelyido. Teacher din namin si Toma. Sabi niya, ang definition daw ng FAITH ay- Food Always In The House (Sa ilang pagkakataon ay nasabi ko na may katwiran din naman si Toma). Parati siyang may dalang tasa sa loob ng klase. Kung iisipin ay nagkakape lang si Toma. Pero marami ang tsismis na brandy raw ang laman ng tasa ni Toma. Ang consistent ka-drinking session ni Toma, si Mang Celso.

Mang Celso- si Mang Celso ang dakilang janitor ng science high. sabi nila, noon daw kasagsagan ng July 16 eartquake, inakyat ni Mang Celso yung flag pole sa harap ng building. Para daw just in case na gumuho ay nandoon pa rin siya sa itaas. Hindi naman napatunayan ang tsismis na ito.

Ginang- Gusto ko si Ginang dahil gusto ko ang subject niya-Filipino, Noli, El Fili, Florante at Laura. Minsan na rin akong nautusan ni ginang-pero hindi tungkol sa paaralan, kundi personal na lakad (sa kasamaang palad, nakita ako roon ng tiyahin kong nakasakay sa jeep sa isang di inaasahang lugar at ang sabi niya sa akin- bakit ka nariyan?)

Dayon- Paboritong pumaswit ni Dayon habang nagsusulat ng equation ng calculus sa blackboard. Ilang beses din akong nakulili sa pagpaswit niya ng "When I Dream About You" araw-araw. Pero ang hindi ko malilimutan sa kanya ay nang sinabi niya sa akin na "ano ba talaga ang gusto mong manyari?" dahil hindi ko maintindihan yung tinuturo niyang Computer Subject.

Anto- Magaling na teacher si Anto, kahit na minsan eh inaantok talaga ako sa klase niyang puro tungkol sa kemikal at equation. Sabi nung katabi kong amboy na kaklase ko- "alam mo, minsan pinagnanasaan ko rin si Anto. Pero nawawalan ako ng gana kapag nai-imagine kong nakanganga siya".

Aryo- Kaibigang matalik ni Aryo si Anto. Kwento ni Aryo, "minsan may pulubing nanghingi ng limos sa akin. Eh hindi ko binigyan. Alam ninyo ginawa? Dinuran ako! Alam ninyo ginawa ko? Edi dinuran ko rin!"

Sarzaparilla-Oldies na si Sarzaparilla. At ang kanyang codename kapag kris kringle- "Charisma". Para bang sinasabi niyang, Hoy! May asim pa!

The Armed Forces of the Philippines is now contemplating on the idea of accepting gay and lesbian applicants to be part of the Military Organization.

In a GMANews interview, Army chief Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado expressed that the military needs further study whether they could allow gays and lesbians to join the ranks, as he noted that there are certain areas where their capabilities and skills may be utilized.

For as long as you are not showing outward manifestation, you are not disturbing others, you are not causing scandals, then there is no problem with that,” said Army chief Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado.

This is my 100th post.

So I will try to create a countdown- some sort of 100 things na sa palagay ko eh nangyayari sa Pilipinas, o sikat sa Pilipinas sa pangkasalukuyang panahon (parang iniisip ko tuloy ngayon, sana ginawa ko ito noong pang-sampung post ko pa lang):

2. Talamak ang graft and corruption. Maririnig mo ito sa radyo, makikita sa tv, mababasa sa diyaryo. Sa katunayan, parang manhid na nga yata ang tainga ng pinoy kaya't hindi na sila nagugulat kapag may mga balitang tungkol dito.

3. Ckat na ckat ang txtng. Naging txting cptal of d world p nga ang pnas eh. Buhay na buhay ang companies ng Smart, Globe at Sun Cellular. Word of mouth ang unlitxt, unlimited, e-load, autoload, pasa load at all calls. Naglipat-bakod na rin mula sa Globe papunta sa Sun si Aga Muhlach.

4. GMA at ABS CBN pa rin ang top television networks. Pero hindi mo malaman kung sino talaga ang number one dahil pareho silang nagsasabing sila ang Number 1.

5. Bumalik na sa bansa si Jocjoc Bolante matapos ang ilang taong pamamalagi sa US. Kasalukuyang dinidinig ang kaso ng Fertilizer Scam habang tila natabunan na naman ang kaso ng NBN Deal (asan na si Jun Lozada?), Euro Generals (mababa na ang euro kaya tahimik na rin), at ang Road to Nowhere Scam (nowhere na, hindi na kasi Senate President si Villar).

6. Madalas magkasakit si FG Mike Arroyo; lalo na kapag pinatatawag siya ng Senado.

7. Naghiwalay na si Dingdong at si Karylle at ang itinuturong dahilan-si Marimar; ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Tadyang ni Fredo (Ayan, nagkagulu-gulo na).

8. Sikat na sikat ang balitang recession sa US. Pero mas sikat si Obama. Katunayan, balitang-balita kung paanong hinabol ni GMA si Obama sa lahat ng pagkakataon para lang makapagpa piktyur.

9. Laya na si Erap. Mahal na naman siya ng masa despite of his corruption and plunder charges. Erap for President in 2010?

10. Speaking of 2010, nag-umpisa na ang kampanyahan ng mga Pulitiko sa tv, sa radio, sa internet, at sa diyaryo.

11. Traffic sa may North Avenue hanggang sa Balintawak. Pero ok lang dahil improvement naman ito. Ginagawa na kasi yung extension ng MRT papunta sa LRT.

12. Grabe ang pila sa lotto nitong mga nagdaang araw. Paano, umabot yata sa more than 300 Million ang winnings sa 6/49. Hindi ako tumama. Hindi naman kasi ako tumataya.

13. Nararamdaman na ang effect nang recession sa US. May mga companies kasi na nag lay off at nagsara dito sa Pilipinas. Lay off ang Intel; Umalis na ang Fedex; balitang may mga susunod pa.

14. Nakabukas na ang SCTEX (Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway). Mabuting balita ito sa mga bumibyahe patungonng North Luzon dahil malaki ang natitipid na oras (at gasolina).

17. Nakakasawa na ang telenovela at koreanovela sa GMA at sa ABS CBN.

18. Patay na si Rustom Padilla. Nagbagong anyo at nagbagong pangalan na siya dahil siya na daw si Bebe Gandanghari.

19. Sikat na sikat si Pacquiao sa buong mundo. Natalo na kasi niya last year si Oscar Dela Hoya; at kasalukuyang pinaghahandaan ang laban nila ni Ricky Hatton sa May 2009.

20. Inumpisahan na ang Random Drug Testing sa mga Secondary at Tertiary Schools. Nahuli kasi ng PDEA ang Alabang Boys na gumagamit ng Drugs. "Social Users" lang daw sila. Wow, men!

21. Tumaas ang presyo ng LPG. Naisalang sa hotseat si Sec. Angie Reyes dahil dito. Pero wala rin yatang nangyari sa investigation.

22. Sumikat na naman ang Pinas sa buong mundo dahil sa nag-issue ang World Bank ng mga lists of Philippine Companies na banned sa kanila on issue of corruption.

23. Speaking of Corrupt companies, nagtatalak na naman sa Senado si Miriam Santiago. Siya kasi ang Head investigator sa issue.

24. Nagkaroon ng Cancer si Cory Aquino. Pero lumalabas pa rin siya paminsan-minsan lalo na kapag may rally ang opposition.

25. Sikat si Charisse, Si Arnel Padilla at yung chef sa White House na hindi ko alam ang pangalan. Kahit paano, may positibo pa ring impact ang Pinoy sa ibang bansa.

26. Uso ang blogging. Madaling medium kasi ito para maipahayag ang gusto mong sabihin (kahit na wala naman talagang bumabasa sa blog mo).

27. Talamak na rin ang iba't ibang social sites katulad ng Friendster, Multipy, etc.

28. Marami ring Franchise international shows ang sumisikat sa bansa. May local adoptation na tayo ng Survivor, Big Brother, Family Feud, 1 vs 100, Deal or No Deal, Philippine Idol, Kakasa ka ba sa Grade Five, etc. Pero nakakainis dahil pinapasukan ng text votes galing sa televiewers. Nakakainis, as in.

29. Mababa pa rin ang sweldo. Mataas pa rin ang tax.

30. Dumadami na naman ang government projects sa kalsada. Malapit na naman kasi ang eleksiyon.

Alaminos folk pool resources to raise ‘bright kids’

ALAMINOS CITY – It is said that it takes a community to raise a child. In the western Pangasinan city of Alaminos, the community, local government and the Department of Education have been pooling their resources to raise “bright children.”

The city launched the “Bright Child” program three years ago after local educators found out that the performance of the city’s elementary and high school students in the National Achievement Test (NAT) was, to say the least, dismal.

The scenario then: Students performed poorly in Mathematics, English and Science in the NAT; workbooks and reference materials in local schools were inadequate; there was lack of specialized instructional rooms; and the high dropout rate was a problem.There was also a high malnutrition rate among pre-school and elementary students, shortage of day care centers, lack of sports facilities and lack of in-depth knowledge on the city’s history and culture.

Renato Viray, city schools superintendent, says that in the 2004 Grade 6 NAT, the division placed last among 13 divisions in the Ilocos region and 185th among 188 divisions in the country. The dropout rate for both elementary and high schools was also high, he says.

“There was a big need for interventions for the children’s performance to improve,” Alaminos Mayor Hernani Braganza says.

This situation moved the community to implement the Bright Child program to address the needs of the children and to develop their potentials by providing them comfortable and quality education and better health and nutrition.

Braganza says DepEd on its own cannot develop a “bright child.”

“The support of the entire community, the local government and the parents will determine the future of a child,” he says.

Three years later, the joint efforts have started to show results.

During a recent education summit in the city, Viray reported that the division was “making strides in improving the achievement level of pupils.”

In the 2007 NAT, the division ranked 6th and 8th in the elementary and secondary levels, respectively, in the Ilocos region.
