November 27 & 28 Holidays Retracted

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has retracted the previous Proclamation 1808 declaring as National Holidays, November 27 & 28 in celebration of the Eid'l Adha.

Instead, by virtue of Proclamation 1808-A, the non-working regional holidays is only applicable in the Autonumous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

A Time For Compassion

Even as the 2010 election in the Philippines comes nearer, political issues, discussions, and bickerings are temporarily put on hold to give way to the more important issue of the past weeks- help and compassion so much needed for the victims of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng which put the nation in a state of calamity.

Typhoon Ondoy brought so much rainfall in the country and put most of part of the Metro Manila in deep water. Many people died, while houses, properties and business establishments were badly damaged by the flood.

A week after, and even the nation can even rise up from Ondoy's wrath, another typhoon, Pepeng, brought havoc on the northern part of Luzon. Landslides occured on the mountainous parts of the region; water dams were forced to release water that caused heavy floods in the nearby provinces, and crops and livelihood resources were badly damaged.

Indeed, this is a time for the country of the Philippines to stop fighting about politics and corruption, but instead focus all the efforts into finding the best ways possible to help the victims of the calamities.

This is a time for Compassion and Action.

And every Filipino is expected to give it.

Hope In Our Midst

Let's admit it.

We are at a point in our history where graft, corruption and deceit are prevailant in our midst. We see, hear, and listen about it in the news- people pointing fingers, accusing each other with this and that, all going towards irregularities on governance.

Jonel Dignadisi, an Overseas Filipino Worker has been given appreciation by the Philippine Embassy in Dubai when he returned 470,000 dirhams (P6.2 million) left by a tourist passenger on a public bus that Dignadisi was driving.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Jonel Dignadisi personally returned the money to the owner. Dignadisi discovered the money inside a bag, together with the owner's passport.

The story might sound like an old tune, considering that we have already heard similar stories before, however, I believe there is a need to give emphasis on this act of heroism especially in these times of dishonesty and distrust in our country.

As we wait for change to happen in our government, may we also, as Filipinos, bear in mind that we can also be agents of change.

There is hope. And hope is found in each and everyone of us.

Bayanihan At Work

In a nation where most of the news we hear everyday implicate corruption, poverty, graft, and disagreements, it is very refreshing to hear and learn that Good Things still exist.

Such as the case in Sitio Dumaliguia, Quezon, Nueva Viscaya, where the project, Rangtay Pagbiagan, is initiated.

Residents of Sitio Dumaliguia, an agricultural village, have started contributing P5 monthly to the community’s treasury to pool funds for the repair of their hanging bridges under the project “Rangtay Pagbiagan” (Bridge of Life).

The hanging bridges, approximately 100 meters long, were destroyed during recent typhoons that hit the area.

Out of the 114 families contributing since September 2008, the project has already raised more than P2,000. In addition, the Local Government and personnel of FMC Mining Corp., provides labor in order to build at least two hanging bridges.

The hanging bridges serve as the sitio's link to the markets, where their products, like rice and banana are being sold.

Also, the bridges are being used by children when coming to schools. In previous times, when bridges were destroyed, children were forced to drop out of school, that's why the dropout rate is so high.

Indeed, Bayanihan is still alive in our culture. And I do hope that as other people are able to read and learn about this worthwhile activity, may they be encouraged and continue to believe that something good still exists in this country.

Sikat na sikat ngayon (talamak na nga ata yung tamang term?) yung mga t-shirts na may pagka-pinoy ang tema.

Ilan sila Francis M. at Tado sa mga kilalang manufacturers ng mga Pinoy T-shirts. Pero siyempre, mawawala ba naman ang mga nagbebenta nang mga katulad nito sa Greenhills, Divisoria, at maging sa mga tiyangge at palengke?

Ewan ko sa inyo, pero ako, asiwa ako, at hindi ako pabor dun sa mga t-shirts na medyo "negative ang dating". Halimbawa ng mga ito ay yung mga t-shirt na may nakasulat na:

• di bale nang tamad, wag lang pagod

• inutel inside

Sa unang tingin, masasabi mong coooool ang mga t-shirt designs na ito. Matatawa ka rin dahil medyo comic naman talaga ang dating.

Pero sa huli, mapapaisip ka- Kung sino at ano ang isinusuot mo, ipinapakita nito ang karakter nang taong nasa loob ng damit na suot mo.

MANILA, Philippines – A basketball player for Talk N’ Text was red in the face after he reported the loss of his car to the Quezon City police just before dawn Sunday.

The 26-year-old cager, Abraham Santos, who admitted that he had a few drinks, eventually learned that his silver sports car was parked just a few blocks away.

“He probably forgot that someone had borrowed his car. When he looked outside for it, he thought someone had stolen it,” said Insp. Angelo Nicolas of the Quezon City Police District.

Nicolas, head of the QCPD’s anticar theft unit, said his men checked the area of Tomas Morato Extension early morning Sunday to verify if the vehicle was indeed missing.

But to the surprise of the policemen, the “stolen” car was found just a few blocks away with all its accessories and parts intact.

Santos reported the “carjacking” incident to the police at around 5:46 a.m. Sunday.

But what Santos appeared to have forgotten was that he allowed a friend of his, a certain “Tito Caloy,” to borrow his car. Caloy then parked the vehicle four blocks away in front of a coffee shop.

Monday morning, Santos was allowed to bring home his silver Mitsubishi GSR after he presented the papers for the vehicle to anticar theft operatives.

Townsville toilet row – man sacked over bathroom habits

A TOWNSVILLE man has been sacked for `un-Australian' toilet habits.

Amador Bernabe, 43, uses water to clean himself instead of toilet paper.

Mr Bernabe, a machine operator on a working visa from the Philippines, said it was his culture.

But on Thursday he got the shock of his life when his foreman followed him into the toilet questioning his toilet hygiene.

Mr Bernabe said his employer Townsville Engineering Industries (TEI) sacked him yesterday for not going to the toilet the Australian way.

The move has angered union bosses and politicians on the Australia Day weekend.

"I went to go to the toilet and I took a bottle of water when my foreman saw me and he said `you can't bring the water in there'," Mr Bernabe said.

"I asked why and he said it wasn't good but I said it's our way and he followed me into the toilet.

"I said it's my personal hygiene. I didn't break any law, I didn't break any rules of the company, why can't I do this, and he said he would report me to the manager.

"The next morning when I came in I went to punch my time card and he told me the manager wanted to talk to me in his office.

"He asked me what had happened and I explained to him and he said if I didn't follow the Australian way I would be immediately terminated and I said `sir, then you better terminate me'."

Australian Manufacturing Worker's Union state organiser Rick Finch said the incident was shocking.

"I think it is atrocious, an invasion of a person's rights and cultural beliefs," he said.

"The paradox of the toilet and a person's actions is something that no boss can even think about interfering with and the thought that bosses think they have the control to get involved in the toiletry is a gross invasion of an employee's privacy.

Mr Bernabe, a father of four, had been with the company since April 2008 and said he had no problems until yesterday.

Bike thief makes series of mistakes…
…until finally arrested by police

For committing one blunder after another, an 18-year-old was arrested by Quezon City policemen on Saturday.

The unlucky man was identified as Ramon Igay, a resident of P. Basilio Street in Pasay City.

According to the police, Igay’s first mistake was stealing a motorcycle that had been left in front of his house.

While driving the vehicle on his way to Novaliches, the teenager committed his second mistake: He ignored a group of policemen who tried to flag him down on North Avenue.

In his haste to escape from the pursuing lawmen, Igay made yet another mistake: He turned right into the North Luzon Expressway where motorcycles are banned.

Insp Angelo Nicolas of the Quezon City Police District’s anticar theft unit said it was only after they caught up with Igay that they discovered he had stolen the blue Honda Wave motorcycle with license plate 4360 DP.

Nicolas said his men flagged down the teenager because his motorcycle did not have a registration sticker from the Land Transportation Office.
