Fashionable Nursing Scrubs

Being a complete novice with regards to surgical and medical terms, I was a bit confused when my brother, who is based in the United Kingdom, has emailed me and asked me where he could buy nursing scrubs. Though the hospital where he is currently employed provides one, he said that it is always good that he has an alternate scrub on his own.

He went on to explain that nursing scrubs, together with cotton surgical scrubs, are those suits that medical practicioners, particularly nurses and nursing assistants, wear while on duty. Needless to say, they should always look neat and nice whenever assisting patients- but then, neat and nice should not mean you could not be fashionable.

These days, there are nursing scrubs that are trendy and cool to wear. There are also cotton surgical scrubs that have nice prints and can fit the character of the one wearing them.

I told my brother that there will definitely be cheap scrubs for men that are sold here in the local market, however, I am not so sure if these are authentic.

I searched for the web and found out that there are online shops that offer comfortable and quality (yet trendy!) nursing scrubs. Maybe, I will just ask my brother to purchase online rather than let me buy for him. This makes it more beneficial for him because he'll get to chose the one trendy and fashionable scrub that he likes to wear at work.

Going Organic

Going organic is definitely the "in" thing these days, as people are starting to become more health-conscious with what they do, what they wear, and what they eat.

This is actually due to the fact that people are concerned with the many new diseases and ailments caused about by the chemicals that are unconciously being taken into our bodies along with our food.

How does this happen? Well, due to advanced science and technology, researchers and scientiests are finding ways to speed up the growth process of our farm animals. This involves giving them chemicals and other artificial nutrients. With this, when the meat are converted for our food consumption, there are big chances that we also intake the chemicals into our body system.

As a result, negative reactions happen inside our bodies, and may cause development of disease and sickness.

But the good thing is, as I have mentioned on my first line, people are becoming more health-conscious and are now choosing organic vegetables, organic fruits, and organic meats for their food choices. This way, there little chances that harmful chemicals are being taken into their body systems.

For example, there are now certain farms that grow animals (like beef, cattle and poultry) the "organic" way. This means that they are providing natural lifestyles or habitat to the animals, and that they allow them to grow in using the natural life cycles. This ensures that the final consumers who buy the meat products are safe from unconsciously taking artificial chemicals and substances in their bodies.

It is about time that all of us consider going organic in our own lifestyles. This is good for the environment; and this is definitely good for all of us.

For My Eyes Only

After a series of frequent headaches, I decided to subject myself for a physical medical check-up last February. The result revealed that I now need to seriously consider wearing eyeglasses. As the optometrist has advised, poor eyesight results to headache.

Many first-time mothers who have just given birth to a child find it very difficult in dealing with their bodies' physical conditions. Dealing With The Big "C"

Having dealt with two cancer cases in the family, I feel there is a need to share my views about what people should do when there are relatives or close friends who have contracted the dreaded Cancer disease.

First of all, Cancer, according to wikipedia, is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth (division beyond the normal limits), invasion (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood). These three malignant properties of cancers differentiate them from benign tumors, which are self-limited, and do not invade or metastasize. Most cancers form a tumor but some, like leukemia, do not. The branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer is oncology.

As there are no sure medical treatments yet developed in arresting the disease, a lot of people who suffer from cancer are left, most of the times, hopeless with their cases.

If you have a relative, a family member, or a friend, who is suffering from Cancer, my simple advise is this: Be Physically, Emotionally, and Spiritually Present on their side.


1. Cancer patients tend to decrease their strength and immunity. Cancer tends to paralyze the body, and so it is but necessary that there is always somebody to assist the patient in almost everything that they do.

Assist the patient with delicate concern.


2. Due to the fact that a cancer patient thinks he/she already has a hopeless case in surviving the disease, his/her emotions will definitely be unstable. Always be there to support him/her. Strengthen his/her emotions and don't get affected when he/she turns his/her bad moods toward you. Be an understanding listener and advisor whenever a patient needs somebody to talk to.


3. There is hope, even when there seems to be nothing more! I like the saying:

God is too wise to be mistaken.
God is too good to be unkind.
When you don’t understand,
When you don’t see His plan,
When you can’t trace His hand,
Trust His heart.

There are things that our minds and our eyes could not understand. But the Lord is giving us an assurance that there is hope. We just have to rely on Him because He knows what's best for us.

Be an encourager. In times when you have to deal with Cancer patients, be the one to send the message that there is hope, because all things are possible with Jesus.

Johnny Delgado is Dead

Reports are now circulating in Tweeter and other social sites that Filipino actor Johnny Delgado is dead at past 1 pm this afternoon, November 19, 2009.

Delgado, a great actor and husband of director Laurice Guillen, was diagnosed of lymphoma, a type of cancer, sometime in 2008.

He was 60 years old.

During his showbiz career, Delgado won six awards and at least 19 nominations. You may see his various achievements and movie works here.

Getting Over Postnatal Depression

Postnatal depression, or postpartum depression, is a clinical depression that can affect women after giving birth. Typical symptoms include sadness, insomnia, appetite changes, crying episodes, anxiety, and irritability.

According to recent studies, postpartum depression, it is more likely that it is due to the significant changes in a woman's hormones during pregnancy.

Also, it must be noted that after pregnancy, women typically feel bad about themselves because of the changes in their physical bodies. Thus, a woman who just gave birth tends to be jealous over the fact that her husband might go and look for another woman who looks better than her.

It is therefore, during these times, that a husband should always ensure to his wife that she is still and will always be the love of her life. And to further assure her, why not surprise her with a Mommy Makeover?

The first one, which involves spread of malignant cells in the tissue that covers the abdominal area, is called the Peritonial Mesothelioma. The second one, which is Pleural Mesothelioma, occurs into the sac that covers the pleural cavity around the lungs.

While the mesothelioma is indeed a rare form of cancer, it is very important that people, especially those working in the construction industry where there are big possibilities of workers being exposed to asbestos, should take very careful precautions. If we take the case in the United States where there were many previous cases of patients with mesothelioma prognosis, people even go as far as hiring mesothelioma lawyers to represent them during asbestos or mesothelioma lawsuits.

There are certain cases where patients suffering from this disease survive and still live normal lives after their battle with cancer. But of course, it is always a priority to keep the disease from coming, rather than battling it out when it's in your body.

Michael Jackson's Death Ruled Homicide

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office has ruled as Homicide the tragic death of Pop Star Micahel Jackson on June 25, 2009.

The autopsy concluded that a fatal combination of drugs including lethal levels of powerful anesthetic propofol has been given to Michael Jackson hours before he died. Jackson's personal physical, Dr. Conrad Murray, who was with Jackson on the morning he died, has been accordingly charged.

Even as the Department of Health has advised Pacquiao not to go home as planned on Friday, May 7, 2009, after his devastating win over Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas, Atienza comes to the rescue and disputes the DOH's advise.

The DOH has very good reasons, though, as to why they issued an advisory-that is to avoid a possible entrance of the H1N1 Influenza virus in the country.

Atienza states,

"He is healthier than most of us,” Atienza said. “He could be the healthiest Filipino now.”

Sige na nga, Sec. Atienza. Malusog nga siguro si Manny. Pero lahat ba ng entourage niya ay masasabi mong kasing-lusog ni Manny? Ilan ba ang amuyong na kasama ni Manny pag-uwi sa Pilipinas?

With due respect, Sir, Sec. Atienza. You are putting the entire country into a very risky situation.

I received news that Master Rapper Francis Magalona already passed away today. Kiko has been previously diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.

Rapper-TV host Francis Magalona died of leukemia Friday at the Medical City in Mandaluyong, his co-hosts at the GMA Network’s noontime show “Eat Bulaga” said. He was 44.

Magalona succumbed to severe sepsis as a complication of leukemia and passed away at 12 noon.

Basureros

Ever since it was diagnosed that I am having a posible heart enlargement in the last APE, I have exerted more effort to do physical exercises.I do jogging during week days and do long - ride mountain biking every Sunday. But this Sunday is a special Sunday to me. While I was on my way to the mountains of Busay (Cebu) hoping to strengten my heart by this exercise, instead, I personally encountered a heart-breaking scene that changed me. I already passed the Marco Polo Plaza ( formerly Cebu Plaza Hotel ) when I decided to stop to buy bananas at a small carenderia located along the road. I haven't taken any solid food that morning so I need fruits to have the needed energy to get to my destination - the mountain top. I am almost done eating with the second banana when I noticed two children across the street busily searching the garbage area.

"Basureros", I said to myself and quickly turned my attention away from them to sip a small amount of water. I cared less for these kind of children actually; to make it straight, I do not like them, and I do not trust them evenmore. You see, several times I have been a victim to these kind of children who are pretending to be basureros looking for empty bottles and cans when in fact the 'plangganas', 'kalderos', and 'hinayhays' are their favorites. I remember one afternoon while I was watching a Mike Tyson fight when I noticed that the TV screen suddenly became blurred. I checked outside and saw two young basureros running away with my newly installed antenna.

Hatred may be a little bit stronger word to describe my feeling towards these basureros, but I do not like them honestly. not till I met these three children.

I was about to embark on my bike again when I heard one of the two children, a girl of about 7 or 8 of age saying aloud to the other , a 12-yr old boy , " kuya si dodong kuha-a kay nag-sige'g tan-aw sa mga nagkaon, mauwaw ta" (kuya si dodong kunin mo kasi tumitingin sa mga kumain, nakakahiya), only then that I noticed a small boy standing near to me biting slightly his finger. He's a few inches shorter if compared to my 5 years old son ( but I knew later that he's also 5 yrs. Old). Though he did not ask for food to anyone in the carenderia, the way he looked at the customers who were eating , enough to convince me that he is intensely craving for it. The older boy then quickly crossed the street and gently pulled out the little one who politely obeyed. As I watched the two crossing back the street to the garbage area, I heard the tindera saying " Lo-oy kaayo nang mga bataa uy, mga buotan ra ba na" (kawawa naman yung mga batang yun mababait pa naman).

I learned further from the carenderia owner that the children are from a good family , both parents were working before , and that their father got a stroke 3 years ago and became partially paralized and their mother died of heart attack while their father was still confined at the hospital. The parents were still in their early forties when the catastrophe happened, and the children became basureros since then to meet their daily needs and for their father's medication.

Deeply moved by what I heard, I went to a nearby bakery and bought 20 pesos worth of bread and gave it to the children who initially refused including the little boy. " Sige lang noy, salamat na lang, magpalit lang nya mi kung mahalinan na mi" (sige lang po, salamat na lang, bibili na lang po kami mamaya kung makabenta na kami) the young girl said to me. I explained that they need to go home because it started to rain . " Naanad na man mi ani " (nasanay na po kami)the girl answered again. Again, I explained that the rain can make them sick and if they'll become sick there's no one to take care of their father. Upon mentioning their father, they nodded and acccepted the bread but I noticed that the older boy did not eat. When I asked him if he does not like the kind of bread I bought for them he smiled but as he's about to explain, the little girl, who is the more talker of them interrupted, " Domingo man gud ron ,noy, basta Sabado ug Domingo hapon ra siya mokaon kami ra ang mokaon ug pamahaw pero dili na pod mi mokaon inig hapon, si kuya ra. Pero basta Lunes ngadto sa Biyernes, kay klase man , si kuya ra sad ang seguro-on ug papamahaw, kami hapon na sad mi moka-on Pero kung daghan mi ug halin mokaon mi tanan." (Linggo po kasi ngayon, pag sabado at lingo hapon lang po sya kumakain, kami lang po ang kumakain ng agahan pero di na po kami kakain pagdating ng hapon si kuya lang po. Pero pag lunes hanggang biyernes, kasi may pasok, si kuya lang po nag-aagahan, kami hapunan lang pero kung marami kaming benta kami pong lahat kumakain) she continued. "Ngano man diay ug mokaon mong tanan, bahinon ninyo bisan ug unsa ka gamay?" (bakit kung kumain kayong lahat, hati-hatiin nyo na lang kahit kunti lang ang pagkain?) I countered. The young girl reasoned out that their father wanted that her older brother to come to school with full stomachs so he can easily catch up the teacher's lessons. "Inig ka trabaho ni kuya mo undang na man mi ug pamasura , first honor baya na siya " (pag nagkatrabaho si kuya, hihinto kami sa pamamasura, first honor kasi sya) the little boy added proudly. Maybe I was caught by surprise or I am just overly emotional that my tears started to fall. I then quickly turned my back from them to hide my tears and pretended to pick up my bike from the carenderia where I left it.

I don't know how many seconds or minutes I spent just to compose myself; pretending again this time that I was mending by bike.

Finally I get on to my bike and approached the three children to bid goobye to them who in turn cast their grateful smiles at me. I then took a good look at all of them specially to the small boy and pat his head with a pinch in my heart. Though I believe that their positive look at life can easily change their present situation, there is one thing that they can never change; that is , their being motherless. That little boy can no longer taste the sweet embrace, care, and most of all , the love of his mother forever? Nobody can refill the empty gap created by that sudden and untimely death of their mother. Every big events that will happen to their lives will only remind them and make them wish of their mother's presence. I reached to my pocket and handed to them my last 100 peso bill which I reserved for our department's bowling tournament. This time they refused strongly but I jokingly said to the girl " sumbagon teka ron kung di nimo dawaton" (suntukin kita dyan pag hindi mo tinanggap yan). She smiled as she extended her hand to take the money. " Salamat noy makapalit gyud me ron ug tambal ni papa " (salamat po, makakabili kami nito ng gamot ni papa) she uttered. I then turned to the small boy and though he's a few feet away from me, I still noticed that while his right hand was holding the half - filled sack , his left hand was holding a toy- a worn out toy car. I waved my hands and said bye bye to him as I drove towards the mountains again. Did he just found the toy in the garbage area ? or the toy was originally his - when the misfortune did not took place yet? - I did not bother to ask. But one thing is crystal clear to me. That inspite of the boy's abnormal life, he did not give up his childhood completely. I can sense it that way he hold and stare at his toy.

My meeting with that young basureros made me poorer by 100 pesos. But they changed me and made me more richer as to lessons of life are concerned. In them, I learned that life can changed suddenly and may caught me flat footed. In them, I've learned that even the darkest side of life, cannot change the beauty of one's heart.

Those three children, who sometimes cannot eat three times a day, are still able to hold on to what they believe was right. And what a contrast to most of us who are quick to point out to our misfortunes when caught with our mistakes. In them, I've learned to hope for things when things seem to go the other way.

Lastly, I know that God cares for them far more than I do. That though He allowed them to experience such a terrible life which our finite minds cannot comprehend, His unquestionable love will surely follow them through. And in God's own time they will win.

Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.
